Yoga Nidra Meditation Insights

tumblr_inline_mnb22qBzRr1qz4rgpYoga nidra or “yogic sleep” is a sleep-like state which yogis report to experience during their meditations. Yoga nidra, lucid sleeping is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness. The distinguishing difference is the degree to which one remains cognizant of the actual physical environment as opposed to a dream environment. In lucid dreaming, one is only (or mainly) cognizant of the dream environment, and has little or no awareness of one’s actual environment.

During our yoga nidra practice tonight, we first began with some gentle stretching and movements on the yoga mat while lying down.  During this period, I felt very relaxed and any tension was release during this initial practice.  The main part of yoga nidra is a guided form of meditation by the yoga instructor, and we worked deeply through the physical body, energetic body, and emotional body.  As she guided us through the meditation, she asked us to set an intention.

As I fell deeper and deeper into the sleep-like meditation state, I began to see and feel my higher self.  My higher self is not an entity, it is pure white light and the feeling of utter joy and contentment within me.  I feel her frequently during my awakened state as well.  She came to me to answer the question I have been asking myself, how do we endure being around someone we love who is destroying and hurting themselves?

Her answer was very clear and simply: Observe your loved one without judgment and tell them what you are observing about them.  Do not impose your ego’s will with your expectations of outcome or what you believe is best for them, or to satisfy your ego’s need to rescue or save them to feel important or needed. Support your loved one by empowering them to make the change through your observation of their situation in a compassionate, kind, and loving way.

However, that being said, it is much easier to say than do. When we completed the yoga nidra practice, I realized for the first time how to begin this practice and to be able to be with my family members and others who I love and are self destructive.  I will forge ahead and practice what my higher self has directed.  May you find your spiritual path through your higher self.
