Changing Your Internal Dialogue

During this Coronavirus pandemic, when we are spending 24 hours a day at home, and many are alone, we are stuck with our own thoughts and internal dialogue. I am no exception. Negative internal dialogue creates anxiety and distress within us, particularly during these unusual times with no end in sight on the spread of this Coronavirus.

This uncertainty affects our careers, employment, education, vacations, travel, shopping, and pretty much every part of our lives. Recently, I was fortunate enough to continue my Reiki practice through distance sessions with a new client. Because most of my clients have been in-person clients, I was uncertain about how well my distance sessions would go, and became very anxious.

That evening, I decided to change my negative internal dialogue, and began some positive self talk. Since I am the practitioner, I came to realize that I am in control of the session. I needed to convince myself that I have the knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully treat my client by being prepared, organized, and technically competent on the computer. After the session, I realized that all the negative talk was unwarranted as my first session went very smoothly.

The moral of the story is that we are our worst enemy, and we must get out of our own way to succeed. Because I was aware of my negative self talk full of unnecessary fears and doubts which was responsible for creating the anxiety I experienced. When the first session with my new client concluded, it was clear that I was prepared, organized, and competent on my computer, and all the negative self talk was indeed unwarranted.

Now, I am more conscious of my thoughts to make sure the negative self talk is reduced and minimized. Just being conscious of these thoughts will begin to reduce their frequency. So the next time you feel anxiety or panic, go back to what you were thinking about at the time these negative feelings arose. Then, directly address these thoughts to reduce their frequency and severity. Try this technique and see if it helps you! Good luck and stay safe out there!
