The American Awakening

In this darkness shines a bright light of hope for America. Many watching the protests, riots, Coronavirus pandemic problems, President Donald Trump, unemployment, and failed economy in the United States may believe that there is no hope for America. I believe just to the contrary. Evolutionary change whether it is within an individual, a species, or a country, requires awakening and awareness. This change is turbulent, difficult, and very painful.

I believe true change occurs for most people when we have hit bottom. For example, the alcoholic whose spouse divorced them, their family left them, they lost their employment and their home. Finally, they face their own truth and reality. America is going through the same evolutionary change which is painful to watch and experience.

America as a nation is evolving. The old racist establishments of the criminal justice system, discrimination in employment, redlining in housing, etc. are being questioned. The catalyst for all this is President Donald Trump, and facilitated by the Coronavirus pandemic. These events may be necessary parts of our evolutionary process. Many continue to hang onto the status quo, but change is coming and it is inevitable.

In the United States, African Americans were enslaved for hundreds of years after being kidnapped from Africa from 1619-1865, Native Americans were killed, tortured, and removed from their land under the Indian Removal Act of 1830, over 120,000 Japanese Americans, with 62% U.S. Citizens, were incarcerated/interned without charges or trials under Executive Order 9066 from 1942-1945, just to name a few atrocities. These atrocities are the foundation of this country, and cannot be ignored. Even after the emancipation of African American slaves in 1865, lynchings and cross burnings continued, and Jim Crow laws legalized the segregation and discrimination of African Americans in the U.S. until 1965.

Some Americans say, “all that was history.” Well, it’s the foundation of our beliefs and behaviors that continue to the present day as seen in the execution of George Floyd on the street by four police officers last month on May 25, 2020 while caught on video. Many more African Americans have been similarly killed by police officers in the the past decade. Please see article: “A Decade of Watching Black People Die.

Many Americans now are confronted by our past atrocities, and the continuing violence and discrimination against African Americans as seen in the killing of George Floyd. Discrimination of Muslim Americans, Mexican/Latino Americans, Asian Americans, and other racial and ethnic groups also continue in the U.S. Many Americans are protesting, educating themselves, and becoming aware of the harm done to others in the U.S. This is the rude awakening for America, but it’s also the path of evolutionary growth for Americans.
